North Cascades Institute’s mission: conservation through education

North Cascades Institute seeks to inspire a closer relationship with nature through direct experiences in the natural world. Its mission is to conserve and restore Northwest environments through education. Since 1986 it has helped connect people, nature and community through science, art, literature and the hands-on study of natural and cultural history.

North Cascades Institute offers a broad variety of programs for people of all ages. Its youth programs primarily serve young people from diverse and low-income communities. These programs are supported by Institute fundraising via individual donors and foundations. The Institute’s adult classes and field excursions are social enterprise programs funded by participant tuition.

Institute programs include:

  • Residential experiences for K12 students at the Learning Center and summer wilderness adventures in the backcountry for underserved youth
  • Natural and cultural history retreats and field excursions for adults/li>
  • Graduate degree in environmental education and nonprofit leadership
  • Group programs, conferences and retreats at the Learning Center
  • Family getaway weekends at the Learning Center
  • Natural history and humanities special events

North Cascades Environmental Learning Center is located on Diablo Lake in the heart of the North Cascades. A partnership with the National Park Service and the City of Seattle, the Learning Center is surrounded by millions of acres of protected public lands, it’s a hub of discovery in one of the wildest, most biologically diverse landscapes in North America. People of all ages come to learn and explore via innovative programs that inspire and enrich their lives.

North Cascades Institute is a highly rated nonprofit organization and known nationally for its advancement of environment education. The Institute is audited annually and, in 2010, received its seventh consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the leading arbiter of charitable giving. Only 2% of American charities are rated as highly. It has developed and maintains appropriate reserve funds, a viable strategic plan and a clear vision for its future through the leadership of its board and the commitment of a professional staff.
